What is SEO and how does it work?

 Defining Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Let’s start by asking an obvious question: what exactly is SEO? Well, SEO stands for ‘Search Engine Optimization, which is the process of getting traffic from free, organic, editorial, or natural search results in search engines. It aims to improve your website’s position in search results pages. Remember, the higher the website is listed, the more people will see it.

Good SEO involves many different activities, such as:

Identifying relevant keywords with good search traffic potential

Creating high-quality, useful content and optimizing it for search engines and for users

Including relevant links from high-quality sites

Measuring the results

These days, SEO is considered an essential marketing activity.

Differences between paid and organic search

From the outset, it’s important that you understand the differences between the organic, natural search synonymous with SEO and paid search. There are five key differences:

Position

The first difference is that paid search results appear at the top of search engine results pages, and organic results appear beneath them.

Time

Another key difference between paid and organic search is time. With paid search, you get near-instant results, sometimes in minutes; whereas, with organic search, results take more time - often weeks, months, and even years. So you have to play the medium to long-term game with organic search.

Payment

When it comes to paying, well, as the name suggests, with paid search traffic is paid. You pay-per-click (PPC) on a cost-per-click (CPC) basis. What that means is, you pay a fee every time a user clicks on your ad. So instead of relying on organic traffic to your website, you buy traffic for your page by paying Google to show your ad when your visitor does a search for your keyword. For organic search, traffic is free, although it does require an investment of both resources and time.

ROI

In terms of the return on investment or ROI, it's actually much easier to measure with paid search. That's partly because Google provides more keyword data that you can capture in Google Analytics. However, with paid search, ROI can stagnate or decline over time. With organic search, ROI is a little bit harder to measure, but it often improves over time. Over the long term, organic search can offer a very good return on investment.

Share of traffic

When it comes to the share of traffic, roughly 20% to 30% of searchers click on paid results, and 70% to 80% of searchers click on SEO results. So the lion’s share of clicks is actually on the organic results.

Similarities between paid and organic search

It’s not all about differences – there are also similarities between paid and organic search:

Keyword research: You use a search engine for both paid and organic searches, and both require a user to enter a keyword. So you need to do keyword research for organic search and paid search.

Landing pages: Both types of search require you to create landing pages. For SEO, the landing page needs to be connected to your website. For paid search, it can be the exact same landing page you use for organic, or it can be a completely separate stand-alone page that sits off your website.

Traffic: Generating traffic is a major goal of both paid and organic searches. Most importantly, both paid and organic search traffic includes user intent. That is, someone is asking Google a question or searching for information – they are in an active mindset and as a result they are more likely to take action once they find this information.

The three pillars of SEO

As a digital marketer, knowing how to get your brand, website, or company found by searchers is a core skill, and understanding how SEO is evolving will keep you at the top of your game. While SEO changes frequently in small ways, its key principles do not. We can break SEO into three core components or pillars that you need to be familiar with – and action regularly:

Technical Optimization: Technical Optimization is the process of completing activities on your site that are designed to improve SEO but are not related to content. It often happens behind the scenes.

On-Page Optimization: On-Page Optimization is the process of ensuring the content on your site is relevant and provides a great user experience. It includes targeting the right keywords within your content and can be done through a content management system. Common examples of content management systems include WordPress, Wix, Drupal, Joomla, Magento, Shopify, and Expression Engine.

Off-Page Optimization: Off-Page Optimization is the process of enhancing your site’s search engine rankings through activities outside of the site. This is largely driven by backlinks, which help to build the site’s reputation.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Who is this guide for?

If you own, manage, monetize, or promote online content via Google Search, this guide is meant for you. You might be the owner of a growing and thriving business, the website owner of a dozen sites, the SEO specialist in a web agency, or a DIY SEO expert passionate about the mechanics of Search: this guide is meant for you. If you're interested in having a complete overview of the basics of SEO according to our best practices, you are indeed in the right place. This guide won't provide any secrets that'll automatically rank your site first in Google (sorry!), but following the best practices will hopefully make it easier for search engines to crawl, index, and understand your content.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is often about making small modifications to parts of your website. When viewed individually, these changes might seem like incremental improvements, but when combined with other optimizations, they could have a noticeable impact on your site's user experience and performance in organic search results. You're likely already familiar with many of the topics in this guide because they're essential ingredients for any web page, but you may not be making the most out of them.

You should build a website to benefit your users and gear any optimization toward making the user experience better. One of those users is a search engine, which helps other users discover your content. SEO is about helping search engines understand and present content. Your site may be smaller or larger than our example site and offer vastly different content, but the optimization topics in this guide apply to sites of all sizes and types. We hope our guide gives you some fresh ideas on how to improve your website, and we'd love to hear your questions, feedback, and success stories in the Google Search Central Help Community.

Are you on Google?

Determine whether your site is in Google's index

Do a site: search for your site's home URL. If you see results, you're in the index. For example, a search for site:wikipedia.org returns these results.

If your site isn't on Google

Although Google crawls billions of pages, it's inevitable that some sites will be missed. When our crawlers miss a site, it's frequently for one of the following reasons:

The site isn't well connected to other sites on the web

You've just launched a new site and Google hasn't had time to crawl it yet

The design of the site makes it difficult for Google to crawl its content effectively

Google received an error when trying to crawl your site

Your policy blocks Google from crawling the site

How do I get my site on Google?

Google is a fully automated search engine that uses web crawlers to explore the web constantly, looking for sites to add to our index; you usually don't even need to do anything except post your site on the web. In fact, the vast majority of sites listed in our results aren't manually submitted for inclusion, but found and added automatically when we crawl the web. Learn how Google discovers, crawls, and serves web pages.

We offer webmaster guidelines for building a Google-friendly website. While there's no guarantee that our crawlers will find a particular site, following these guidelines can help make your site appear in our search results.

Google Search Console provides tools to help you submit your content to Google and monitor how you're doing in Google Search. If you want, Search Console can even send you alerts on critical issues that Google encounters with your site. Sign up for Search Console.

Here are a few basic questions to ask yourself about your website when you get started.

Is my website showing up on Google?

Do I serve high-quality content to users?

Is my local business showing up on Google?

Is my content fast and easy to access on all devices?

Is my website secure?

Help Google find your content

The first step to getting your site on Google is to be sure that Google can find it. The best way to do that is to submit a sitemap. A sitemap is a file on your site that tells search engines about new or changed pages on your site. Learn more about how to build and submit a sitemap.

Google also finds pages through links from other pages. Learn how to encourage people to discover your site by Promoting your site.

Tell Google which pages you don't want to be crawled

For non-sensitive information, block unwanted crawling by using robots.txt

A robots.txt file tells search engines whether they can access and therefore crawl parts of your site. This file, which must be named robots.txt, is placed in the root directory of your site. It is possible that pages blocked by robots.txt can still be crawled, so for sensitive pages, use a more secure method.

# brandonsbaseballcards.com/robots.txt

# Tell Google not to crawl any URLs in the shopping cart or images in the icons folder,

# because they won't be useful in Google Search results.

User-agent: googlebot

Disallow: /checkout/

Disallow: /icons/

You may not want certain pages of your site crawled because they might not be useful to users if found in a search engine's search results. Note that if your site uses subdomains and you wish to have certain pages not crawled on a particular subdomain, you'll have to create a separate robots.txt file for that subdomain. For more information on robots.txt, we suggest this guide on using robots.txt files.

Read about several other ways to prevent content from appearing in search results.

Avoid:

Letting your internal search result pages be crawled by Google. Users dislike clicking a search engine result only to land on another search result page on your site.

Allowing URLs created as a result of proxy services to be crawled.

For sensitive information, use more secure methods

A robots.txt file is not an appropriate or effective way of blocking sensitive or confidential material. It only instructs well-behaved crawlers that the pages are not for them, but it does not prevent your server from delivering those pages to a browser that requests them. One reason is that search engines could still reference the URLs you block (showing just the URL, no title link or snippet) if there happens to be linked to those URLs somewhere on the Internet (like referrer logs). Also, non-compliant or rogue search engines that don't acknowledge the Robots Exclusion Standard could disobey the instructions of your robots.txt. Finally, a curious user could examine the directories or subdirectories in your robots.txt file and guess the URL of the content that you don't want to see.

In these cases, use the noindex tag if you just want the page not to appear in Google, but don't mind if any user with a link can reach the page. For real security, use proper authorization methods, like requiring a user password, or taking the page off your site entirely.

Help Google (and users) understand your content

Let Google see your page the same way a user does

When Googlebot crawls a page, it should see the page the same way an average user does. For optimal rendering and indexing, always allow Google access to the JavaScript, CSS, and image files used by your website. If your site's robots.txt file disallows the crawling of these assets, it directly harms how well our algorithms render and index your content. This can result in suboptimal rankings.

Recommended action: Use the URL Inspection tool. It will allow you to see exactly how Google sees and renders your content, and it will help you identify and fix a number of indexing issues on your site.

If they were not white, I would wear them to Nike - but I save them for my gym classes (Primarily Zumba). They are extremely comfortable. I usually wear size 7, my feet are not too wide - but I purchase wide because when I dance in an aerobics class, I am on my feet jumping, and moving around for an hour - so want the added comfort. Love these and have had them for over 8 months.

Customer questions & answers :

Question: Is this a stability shoe?

Answer: No. There is nothing arch support.

Question: Are these vegans?

Answer: Yes, according to the description, they are vegan. I have a similar pair that are 100% synthetic. Ignore the other rude answer.

Question: What about if the shoe doesn’t fit?

Answer: These shoes fit my feet perfectly. I wear an 11 wide, my feet have plenty of room, and these shoes fit very comfortably. I also like that they are lite weight and not heavy and bulky. If the size you order doesn't fit then send them back for another size.

Question: Why are these sneakers double the price here on Amazon? Famous Footwear is selling them for $64.99

Answer: Yeah, I should have shopped around. Famous Footwear is a much better price. I definitely overpaid!!! I thought they were Nike Airs, but they’re not. I paid too much.

Question: How long are the laces?

Answer: They are the perfect length. Not too long and not too short. Some shoes have laces that either drag the floor after tying or are so short I can even tie the shoes. These are perfect. Don’t know the actual length though.

Customer advantages & disadvantages

Introduction= These sneakers are so comfortable and they look great. I wanted a sneaker that was soft and doesn't cause blisters when I walk or workout. So, I can take these on vacation and use them for gym and going out since they look nice.  I love these Nike sneakers! The rose gold color is divine- they are great for running, working out, running errands, and going for walks. You can pretty much do anything in them! Great support and very comfortable. My only complaint is that one shoe squeaks. Only the left shoe squeaks- it’s sort of like there is an air bubble left in the sole or something. It can be pretty embarrassing when you are walking down a quiet school hallway and all the classes look out to see what the noise is. 🤦🏼‍♀️ For that reason alone I sometimes choose another pair of shoes to wear instead of my rose gold Nikes. Hopefully, your pair won’t squeak

Advantage of the shoes

These are nice looking trainers, very comfortable to exercise in. I’ve only worn them indoors for dance, cross-trainers, static bike, and strength training due to covid restrictions. I do find that after 20 minutes or so on the cross trainer I still get numbness on the balls of my feet which I was hoping to avoid by purchasing a decent pair of trainers. They are still quite flat inside. I did hope they would come with better arch support. But there’s no saying that’s not down to my posture or body rather than the shoes- not an expert.

The shoes are also very thin material so I would imagine this makes them nice and breathable. But don’t hold their shape very well. I had been looking for a second pair of Nike’s for a while and had checked Amazon off and on for a few months, and finally found one I love. I was skep about the lighter color wondering if it would make me looker shorter and wider, but it didn’t. The change was nice, and I also liked the reflective look of the check on the shoe. The only downside was that the left shoe did pinch into my ankle for a bit, but once they were broken in, this irritation resolved itself. These sneakers are so comfortable and they look great. I wanted a sneaker that was soft and doesn't cause blisters when I walk or work out. So, I can take these on vacation and use them for gym and going out since they look nice. The shoes look cute and comfortable for working out in the gym as well for walking around. I will not use them for running though as there is not enough cushioning there for that. The shoes will get dirty looking quickly in dirty areas. I have this lavender-ash pair, pure white ones, and a grey/pink pair. I totally love these sneakers. I'm a nurse in a clinic and they work great for that. They're not too bulky, not too light. Sporty and cute. I get lots of compliments on them, especially my grey/pink pair. I'm a size 8.5 and they fit perfectly. I usually have trouble buying shoes online. Because my feet are a little wide with a fairly high arch. The toe box is forgiving if you're worried about them being too narrow. This has been a fantastic running shoe. Great support, comfortable fit. Love the slimline look- all black. My only lament is the durability. I live in a tropical climate and I am afraid the shoes fade quickly- despite avoiding the shoes in direct sunlight. Also, after six months the shoes are beginning to dramatically fall apart. Otherwise, it is a shoe I would buy again. These shoes are very comfortable (I have worn these for many long shifts that involve lots of standing and walking around) and cute too! I love the barely rose color, BUT they are prone to getting stained easily due to the light color. They withstood going in the washing machine in a mesh bag, but the stains did not come out completely.

The disadvantage of the shoes = I bought these shoes for work and they are a good fit, nice shoe. But I’ve only had them for a couple of months and now the heal portion on the bottom has air pockets and when I walk all I hear is a poof of air when I walk. It was loud and I couldn’t figure out where the sound was coming from. But the rubber is pushed in and allowing air inside so every step I take all you hear is “poof”. Very disappointing. Great price and I overall loved the shoes. But they are already coming apart on the seams and I have not worn them all that much and take very good care of my shoes but don’t waste your money on them! The sneakers WERE great. They fit perfectly and were comfortable. Not even a month has passed and I'm noticing how cheaply made it really is. I regret buying it, I feel like I threw my money in the garbage. Exactly as pictured. Soft. The only issue I have is they run small. I wear an 11 and they are snug. My feet are average width but do hang over the very narrow area along the arch. Just tried these for a 10 km run and honestly, they were absolute garbage. Obviously, they're a cheaper shoe so I can accept a lack of bells and whistles, but within the first 100 m running in these shoes, it really felt as though Nike's intention when making these things was to encourage consumers to buy a more expensive shoe. Specific complaints: (1) the sole is very hard and offers minimal comfort, to the point that my feet were aching; (2) the last two lace eyelets are positioned such that if you thread your lace all the way to the last one it'll push the hard heel collar corners into the top of your ankles and rub constantly, but if you only thread the lace into the second last eyelet the shoe won't grip the top of the foot adequately; (3) the upper shoe material is of very low quality so durability will be poor. Literally, a suction sound whenever you walk/run, whenever u bend the shoe the midsole makes a suction sound, and I've literally bought it 3 days ago, I've read multiple reviews and most people experience the same issue, they've even returned the shoes and got a new pair to share the same thing. Please explain to me why this happens to ONLY the left shoe and not the right one and will these shoes even last as the suction due to the glue of the sole having issues. These shoes are literally so bad. Sure, they're okay for just walking around in and wearing for lifestyle purposes but these ARE NOT meant for running in. The midsole offers no cushion whatsoever and destroys my legs after anything more than a few miles. I would not ever get these shoes again and they shouldn't even be characterized as running shoes.

To Conclude: Just tried these for a 10 km run and honestly, they were absolute garbage.

I am 100% pleased with this Nike Resolution 5 Wide Sneakers. It fits perfectly in size and is incredibly comfortable. I was a bit skeptical about choosing the 7 1/2 since I usually buy a size 8,9,10,11 in sneakers just so I can wear thick socks for extra cushion. This sneaker does not need extra cushion help.
